PageRank in 2026: Does It Still Matter?

I have worked in search engine optimization since the late 1990s. I started before Google became dominant, watched PageRank turn from an academic paper into an industry obsession, and then observed how quietly it disappeared from public view. What did not disappear is the system itself.

In 2026, PageRank is still relevant. Not as a visible score, not as a tactic, and not as something you can manipulate directly — but as an underlying structural mechanism that modern search systems still depend on.
